Have you tried logging on as a different user? Make a temp user if
necessary to try it, it is often useful to have a spare user for this
sort of thing. That will tell you if it is some settings messed up in
your normal login or a problem with vlc.

I've been meaning to get back to you guys about my VLC issue. I don't
reboot or log out often and never got the chance to try another user.
It's fixed itself. Very odd.
