In my case it's enabled me to put a new language on my CV (Vala). At the very least, it means that your code is available online so can be checked easily. So if someone wants to check how good a developer you are, being able to check some of your real code produced for an OSS project is a lot better than having you take an artificial test or asking loaded questions during an interview.
