I believe you are on the right track as long as we just confine ourselves to XP Pro and Xubuntu. (The Ubuntu example is a bit of a red herring). So, I have a situation where the latest version of Xubuntu does not have the necessary driver whereas old XP Pro does. What is my next step, please, to remedy the situation?
