I am not sure about netflix and silverlight, but the open source alternative for silverlight is called 'moonlight' (http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight). I tried it for something once but couldn't get it to work.
I think, from an old conversation on here, that someone on this list is actually a developer on the mono project. If i am right, i am sure they will be able to help more. Good luck. James.
