We have had a big shift in development, with a firm requirement that the archive been in a state you can develop against the entire cycle. For instance we have held kernel updated until the associated binary drivers caught up, to aid testing and development in Unity. This sort of thing is going on accross the whole disto. Also the new stable+1 team has been hammering hard on failures, and getting things removed which are broken. Overally the release has been a much less rocky place even prior to Alpha-1.
