Pedantically (but it's a bit important anyway), Unity *is* Gnome 3 - both Gnome Shell and Unity use Gnome 3 to provide all the underlying tools a DE needs. Gnome 3 vs Unity isn't a question of defaults - they're two different shells for the same DE.
