Yes - try 11.10 from the live-CD. If you like it, install it. If you prefer the Gnome desktop, consider using XUbuntu. On an older box, it might suit you better. Again, run it from the live-CD until you are sure it's what you want. If the live-CD does everything you want, Ok. If not, you'll know what the problems are without sabotaging your existing install.
