Kris:
Someone must have worked it out because there is one of these machines
available with Ubuntu 10.10(?) pre-installed.
Yes, i think i remember reading that pre-installed machines have slightly
different set-ups.
Sounds like something to do with the graphics, what card does your
machine have in it?
VGA compatible controller
2nd Generation core Processor Family
Intel Corporation integrated graphics controller

Yes, I'm hoping 11.10 will support it better: the two problems I have
are what appears to be a spontaneous sleep which it won't recover from
and occasional freezing of the mouse for a couple of seconds, which
appears in the logs and is apparently a long standing bug with some
synaptics touchpads.
Have you looked here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1843957
Someone seems to be saying that an update of the driver .so file solved some
problems that they had.

No. Changing the SATA didn't seem to do anything. Screen still wouldn't
resume when i opened the lid.
On the whole, i think the machine is good. Its certainly performs better
than the ancient one i had before this - Asus ARP6.
That said, the hardware doesn't seem to be quite so well supported, but i
see that this model is now endorsed by Canonical and i am hoping that it
goes a little better under Oneric.
All the problems i have appear to pertain to the screen: Sometimes text
disappears from my word processor or emails, it takes a bunch of times
resetting the dual monitor set-up to get both monitors to register and, as
is the subject of this thread, the suspend-on-lid-close won't work.
