Third time lucky - you meant Andrew Smith (not me). And he probably doesn't care. As a concrete suggestion, it may be possible to examine the headers of the LinkedIn invitation email and hold such messages for moderation within Mailman. X-LinkedIn-Class: INVITE-GUEST looks like a decent candidate. My other idea is to have a bot automatically accept the link (or friend request, etc.) and then have it do something that the sender will remember for a long time, but that is just the dark side of me talking.
