OK

It seems however my monitor has died, or is dying, as its not working
properly, goes off randomly, starts off grey and a bright grey
background (sorry can't really describe it properly) either way its not
right,.

so

I may start by getting a new monitor from somewhere, i can get tfts for
under £80, and don't see compatability issues with linux, once done,
will look in to either

a) getting a new system pre built
or
b) getting someone to help me build a new system that will work with
LInux from start, saving money

I'd doubt you'd find anything much cheaper than the Acer Aspire Revo, unless you're looking for something a bit higher spec in which case you can probably mix and match bits and maybe re-use some bits from your old PC.

Monitors are getting cheap thought now, cheapest one eBuyer.com have at the moment is a Hanns-G from Hanspree for just over £65...
