Monetary sponsorship - definitely. Twofold effort needed: 1) Make concerted effort to get Ubuntu pre-installed machines made easily available. I keep trying - if we all do that, we might (just) get a better response. 2) Get some paid advertising going to raise awareness that there is an alternative to Windows and Mac, and it is very very good. Release of 12.04 LTS might be the time to go for this. Maybe Canonical would offer good support here?
