Having contacted IT admin prior to posting on this list, they have
stated that there is no proxy server currently running, therefore I
assume that it must be something else. At this stage I do not know what.

Yes you are correct it is a desktop install. I tried to update, the Kent
mirror service is not available so trying a ping for the best service
resulted in UK service. I have also tired configuring the workstation as
instructed in

but again this has proved less than fruitful to date.
