MS have made it much harder to do that since Windows 7. The wording of the EULA was changed.
We have bought laptops and I've built desktops/low-power servers from various suppliers with little or no hardware issues.
Novatech sell *every* computer they do without an OS. They let you chose during the ordering process. Here's their laptop list: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/laptop/all/
Around 6 months ago we bought some Samsung laptops from Amazon (at the time Novatech didn't have any Core i series laptops in stock) which have worked fine with Ubuntu apart from one issue with the VGA output that causes flickering (HDMI/DVI is fine though)
There's a bug on Launchpad and upstream and it looks like from a recent comment there's a patch been suggested to fix it - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/614238
The main point is, that *most* hardware, apart from real bleeding edge stuff will probably work just fine. And after a few months the bleeding edge will be sorted too.

55quid is not bad. As barry sugested linuxemporium doesn't seem like a bad option: http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/hardware/hardware-laptops.html I use dell at work but they are windows machines so I can't judge. ************************************************************** > 4. And you aren't expected to pay for a licence for an OS you'll never use. In the UK, ElpaTech http://www.elpatech.co.uk/ offer a range of PC's pre-installed with Ubuntu and the prices are really good. Unfortunately they don't sell laptops, but I think the proprietor, Ed Barnard might help you source one. He's an Ubuntumaniac. Ed - are you out there? Help.
