When I installed Ubuntu 10.10 the other day from CD on my notebook it 
just picked the network up.  However that was connected to an Ethernet 
cable.  I'm sure I did see the usual network icon at the top of the 
screen though (I didn't try selecting a wireless network but I'd have 
thought you could have configured it).

As to what it didn't install, not sure about that?  I'm guessing it 
might have been the 3rd party MP3 codecs and maybe some updates.
