Can't comment on a dual partition system (don't see why it wouldn't work), but I would suggest before you do anything try and make at least a set of restore discs (usually there is an app supplied by the manufacturer in the Windows installation to create a set of DVDs/CDs) or maybe do a backup of his machine with something like CloneZilla. Otherwise, another thought, USB sticks are cheap these days, you could maybe get hold of a 2 or 4GB USB stick and run Ubuntu off that. It can run like a Live CD (or you could setup persistent storage) and then they can give it a try without having to store anything on the hard drive.
