A nice simple way of achieving similar is to use Backuppc (available in the 
repo's). It's perl based with a nice web interface and i use it to backup 
servers on remote sites to our head office and then archive off weekly to USB 
HDD.  It can be configured to back up using SMB, Rsync over SSH, etc and has 
proved to be very reliable....

Probably worth a look for anyone wanting to put in a simple solution - although 
the method using bash is very cool :)
