Thanks for your comments and yes, I had checked that the file was executable. I know that there are certain difficulties with the installation in 9.10 and I believe I know the way of dealing with the problem but, until I am able to run the file, that will have to wait. With regard to 10.04 my son informs that he has found a way to install VMware Workstation in 10.04 and, if you are interested, I will post the reference.
