Try starting Firefox in Safe Mode. In Ubuntu, press Alt and F2 and in the run box enter firefox -safe-mode or open a terminal and enter firefox -safe-mode at the prompt. Opening Firefox in safe mode will disable all themes and addons, this will hopefully rule out any addons. BTW, Flashblock is (AFAIK) an addon which blocks Flash content (adverts, animations, videos etc).
