Thanks for replying. I tried the Karmic Live CD and found that the microphone works with it! So it must be a configuration issue and not a hardware issue. Here is what the alsa-info.sh script says about my hardware !!Linux Distribution !!------------------ Ubuntu 9.10 \n \l DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 9.10" !!DMI Information !!--------------- Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061 Product Name: RA918AA-ABU t3510.uk !!Kernel Information !!------------------ Kernel release: 2.6.31-19-generic Operating System: GNU/Linux Architecture: i686 Processor: unknown SMP Enabled: Yes !!Soundcards recognised by ALSA !!----------------------------- 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB HDA ATI SB at 0xfe9f8000 irq 16 !!PCI Soundcards installed in the system !!-------------------------------------- 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB4x0 High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) The chip is a Realtek ALC833, for which the the driver is HDA-Intel. I have full listing from alsa-info.sh for both the live CD and my installed system, plus a diff between them, but I don't know enough about this stuff to know where to begin to find a significant difference.
