Have a look at a program called testdisk (sudo apt-get install testdisk) , it runs from a terminal (sudo testdisk) but does have a terminal based gui to lead you through recovering stuff. I've used it several times to recover lost partitions. It can take a while to run though. But seriously, everytime you try and boot from the HDD and it fails you risk damaging what remains of the data. So boot from a CD to do this.
