Well I'd say it depends how close your PC will be to the router. If Virgin are installing it then they should be happy enough to run a cable to where ever your PC is, that way you can connect the PC to the router directly, but if for some reason you want the modem & router to be somewhere else, you can install a wireless card in your PC easily enough (not entirely sure what models work with Ubuntu out of the box, although saying that I have one which I need to install so I'll report back if it works).

I got one of these for a friend who's got Virgin cable (he got his before they started giving out routers for free), and it can be configured to connect to an existing wireless network to convert from wireless to Ethernet. At £18, I thought it was a bargain and cheaper than using homeplug ethernet adaptors.
