Personally I use Kdenlive for video editing...

I've done things like this with it:
http://files.tdobson.net/dfey/render.quick.full.mpg
(note: it's intended to be low quality and deliberately has the time 
rendered because it's not finished)

My best advice would be to install ffmpeg from medibuntu if you have 
issues like that but as the developer says, it might be a bug.
