I don't know a lot about this.  AFAIR, you can't just copy a .vdi file 
to a spare drive, and then copy it back into a new install of VB, can 
you?  Sites I've looked at say you must clone the vdi with

VBoxManage clonevdi source destination

Is that the best way to do it?  (Want to be sure about this before I 
'aptitude remove --purge' my VB!)

And then, having reinstalled, say VB 3.0, how do you reinstate the 
cloned virtual machine?  Are there any 'Gotchas'?
