Ah, thanks! Sounds like it could be the hard drive.

Paul, try installing smart-notifier and running some tests. If you get
stuck then I'm sure someone on this list has used it and will be able
to advise.

FWIW, smart-notifier is a GUI to smartmontools, which usually runs in
the background and checks your hard drive for any issues that may
indicate failure (like a large number of bad blocks or a sudden
increase in response time).
