I am having issues with sound on ubuntu 8.10 having tried both pulse audio and alsa, I am still having a similar issue my volume is low, despite the speaker being turned up and the vlc and panel control being turned up, It plays at a reasonable volume, or at a level I would expect with the speaker turned down to 1/2 or less of its current level.
