Hi John, I've just run a test, and it seems to work. Here is a
step-by-step of how I did it, perhaps it will help:

1 - installed thunderbird from repositories (version 2.0.0.19 (20090105))
2 - installed lightning from mozilla website
(http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/ - version 0.9)
restart thunderbird
3 - installed Google calender provider from website
(https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4631 - version
0.5.1) restart thunderbird
4 - added my calendar from google, using the private ical address
under the calendar's settings. click the ical button, right click on
the link given and select "copy link location" - then it's easy to
paste it into thunderbird
5 - right clicked on calendar in thunderbird, select properties,
unticked the read-only option
6 - I then restarted thunderbird and was asked to supply my gmail
username and password for write access. I somehow landed up with a
duplicate calendar which I deleted, but make sure that the one you
keep is the one which is not read-only.

I also got a lot of alarms popping up and couldn't get them to go
away, I found it was because thunderbird was waiting for a password
prompt in the background. I moved the alarms window around the
screen, and then entered the password. I could then dismiss the
alarms.

I can now add or delete events and they appear in my online google calendar.

HTH... :-)
