Which version of Ubuntu are you running? Ubuntu 8.10 does include a newer network manager which appears to support all sorts of internet connections including wired ethernet, wireless, 3G mobile broadband and dialup. Can't say I've tried it though, in fact I don't even think I have a compatible modem kicking around anymore and I haven't the foggiest if my laptop supports it (I must give this a try sometime).
