You could also look at installing something like deborphan (I know, it's strange to install something to help tidy up!). This will give you a list of 'orphaned' packages, i.e. packages that don't have another package depending on them. I've just noticed that Synaptic gives you the option to search for orphaned packages, although I've not used it yet, so I can't tell you how it works... It's on the Settings menu under Filters, it looks like you have to define a new filter that will pick up the orphaned packages. It will then appear as a choice when you click the 'Custom Filters' button. If you need some more help, reply to this post, and I'll have a look into it, or someone else can try.
