If the ram is damaged if can cause lots of random problems. I've found
that it's always worth running memtest on any new PC to check that the
ram is okay. Do you have a live CD handy? There's an option in the
menu to allow you to run memtest - I'd advise letting it run overnight
to see if it comes up with any errors.
