Have you tweaked the settings in Gnome Power Manager on the task bar? It has options for dimming and how much by. I switch dimming off when on mains, and on when on battery. Richard Hughes (he of GPM fame) attempted to explain to me how exceptionally clever GPM is at guessing when to turn down the brightness, adjusting the time depending on your usage. However this was at LUGRadio Live so I was understandably quite, quite drunk, and thus don't remember the detail. I do recall it sounded good at the time though. Cheers, Al.
