You can actually use AOL with a router, it just the screen same plus @aol.co.uk (for instance [EMAIL PROTECTED]) with the password. The AOL software itself isn't required to use the AOL Broadband (and it's possible to use the AOL software with any ISP as long as you subscribe to the AOL service), but frankly I couldn't get away soon enough (after being tied into a 12 month contract when my other half 'upgraded' to the Gold package (I just wanted to leave AOL, but she thought she was doing the right thing by upgrading from 512k to 1 Meg and tying us into another year of AOL!). My dad has Talktalk Broadband (on their supposedly Free Broadband offer which he pays £10 a month for because they haven't unbundled the exchange) and he gets 2.2MBit fixed, no where near 8MBit and he lives literally 30 metres from the exchange.
