This being sent from SM within Vista - have lost contact with Ubuntu

Was trying to adjust screen size on monitor through "Screen and Video card" when I got a warning message that something had broken (not completed) when I rebooted a little later blank screen with signal out of range which usually a couple of wiggles with the mouse cured but not this time

I would boot up Ubuntu and when the blank screen appears hit Ctrl-Alt-F1
and get into a virtual console. Log in there and do:

        sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and answer the questions. Mostly the defaults will work.

Then reboot or restart X using:

        sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

Tried suggestion twice but it tries to load but to no avail(I say OK to all suggestion)

Cant boot with "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" - have to switch off

Any other ideas?.........When it tries to load desktop I hear a sound of drums in the distance very faint!
