Quick answer: Yes. I've seen a 60-year-old move to ubuntu, with LESS problems than he had with Windows XP.
He spent about a week learning the interface, and asking lots of questions. Then suddenly the questions stop, and he's a happy bunny. We've put a "Internet" shortcut on his desktop (he had the same on Windows. This is not someone who is comfortable with computers!), as well as a "Word" shortcut. And away he's gone. I've not heard a word of complaint, or a question, for a very long time...
