If it is this article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/dec/01/facebook.socialnetworking) you are referring to, it doesn't say that Facebook have pulled Beacon, only modified it to stop posting purchasing information publically. It sounds like they still use the system with the same basic deal with their advertisers.
