Have you tried:

        sudo ifconfig -a

Also see if the kernel detected it by looking at the output of:

        dmesg

Alternatively, try:

         more /var/log/kern.log

If the kernel loads the module it reports it, but if the hardware is not 
found it will jsut be ignored and no device will be created.

I think WiFi is the Achilles heel of Ubuntu acceptance: I've just used 
the fwcutter package in the 'restricted' software manager to install the 
Broadcom firmware on an Asus laptop. I also had to enable the Windows 
driver 'wake-on-LAN-after-power-off' option which, by default, DISABLES 
the Realtek wired connection under Linux! (this is a dual-boot machine).

All working nicely under Ubuntu 7.10, with Compviz 3D effects now!
