OK, before I report this as a bug, which I'm reasonably confident it is, I'd like to get some more information to go with the report, maybe even a fix.
The background is that I have installed from the Ubuntu Gutsy alternate install CD (I've never had a successful install from the live CD, and am more comfortable with a more traditional install!). Everything went fine with no errors until the reboot. Following the reboot it stuck on the Ubuntu image with the progress bar for a while and then dropped out into a BusyBox shell. The same happens with the rescue boot option from the Grub menu, but I get a little more information, notably an error of: Check root= bootarg cat /proc/cmdline or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/abdc9bae-8758-4732-b038-ef726beee880 does not exist. Dropping to a shell! This makes sense because there appears to be no /dev/disk/by-uuid directory at all, so I'm guessing that the necessary module to support the IDE card I have in the machine is not being loaded at boot. I can see the two DVDRW drives that are on the motherboard IDE interface. I've tried using 'all_generic_ide', but not had any success. I'm working on the basis that I need to load the pata_it821x driver that supports the card the drive is connected to into the ramdisk at boot time. Does anyone have any good references on doing this? I've not had much success with Google yet! Oh, and the reason I'm hanging my HD off of a PCI card is that the motherboard is restricted to 33MHz on the IDE bus, and more importantly is restricted to the 137G limit, whereas the drive is a 160G 133MHz bus drive.
