Thinking it would improve my experience, I installed the restricted
ATI driver on my laptop. Restarted the system and...no wobbly windows.
No desktop effects. The setting was set to 'None' in
Preferences->Appearance, and clicking either of the others resulted in
the error message 'Compiz extension not available'. Suffice to say
I've learned my lesson about proprietary drivers, as I've gone back to
the free driver and desktop effects are sorted!

On feisty I was using the restricted driver with Beryl (and then plain
old Compiz), so I don't know why it's such a different experience on
Gutsy. But I am very impressed so far :)
