Yeah, a lot of it is about the apps I guess.

KDE's session management does it for me every time (though to be honest, I 
haven't used GNOME in ages, so don't know how that compares these days).

Also, konqueror is just the best app ever in the history of the world; 
something you can just throw anything at from anywhere and it just deals with 
it. Brilliant, so :-P
