Quick way to see if the problem is in the .gnome2 directory: move it. Rename it to something else and try logging in. This will revert anything you've changed in this dir to their defaults and if it clears the problem then you can put the contents back bit by bit to identify what was actually causing the problem. If that doesn't help try moving some of the other ~/.* things elsewhere.
