Each machine needs updates, and the standard install each one checks in with 
the repositories individually, yes. In exactly the same way that a mac or 
Windows based computer will.

They exist. Some people use apt-proxy, others use apt-catcher. Personally I 
use squid caching proxy server. However there arent many updates for the 
stanble versions so there isnt a tremendous volume, but of course the more 
machines you have, the more traffic you consume.
