In a terminal, type

alsamixer

This will open a GUI.  Make sure none of the channels is muted (MM at 
the bottom).  Use the left and right arrow keys to select the column, 
and tap M to toggle muting off.

The muting appears to get turned on unaccountably - if your sound 
vanishes, it's always worth checking this first.
