I was about to say the same thing :-) Apart from the many other valid reasons why HTML email is a "bad idea" (see http://www.tcrlist.com/Configuring_Plain_Text.htm as a start...), I often read email on my phone, which does not like unnecessary tags in emails taking up both extra screen and memory...
