If it's mounting, it should appear on your desktop (it might be half-off the edge of the screen with only a small part of the icon visible, in which case you need to move the icon), and in Places>Computer. It would most likely be mounted in /media, and should show up in the Nautilus sidebar (press F9 while in nautilus if the bar isn't visible). Can you post the output of the dmesg command, straight after you plug the drive in?
