As someone pointed out on another thread (or possibly another mailing list), the reason for the difference is that ISPs and other software vendors (such as Norton/Symantec) pay Dell to include 'free' software trials with the Vista machine, which is what brings the price down. So it's not just Dell, any hardware vendor will probably be able to offer Windows machines cheaper than Linux ones. A level playing field is what we need (or a load of sponsored trial software on Ubuntu - on second thoughts, looking at the crap that comes with Windows, maybe it's worth paying extra :-) ).
