I believe that it's generally regarded that having a multi-millionaire sugardaddy [1] trumps charitable status :-) As a more serious point, there are significant restrictions on the "political activities" that a charity can undertake. I know that many members of the Ubuntu community would stray into areas classed as political lobbying in some of the things that we are trying to accomplish, for example efforts to ensure that the European Patent system does not expand in scope.
