Indeed! I lived with the issue on Edgy, so I can live with it a bit
longer until I can persuade my boss to buy me a new laptop! I'm not
holding my breath though!

If you are using GNOME goto the System>Preferences>Power Management. On the
first tab "On AC Power" change the drop down menu for "when laptop lid is
closed" to your own preference.
