Another possibility (not that I've read the rest of this thread properly, so I'm sorry if it's already come up) is mail2forum ( http://www.mail2forum.com/forums/index.php ) which allows people to interact with a list either through email or through a phpbb forum. (I know phpbb is not the be-all and end-all, but it just happens to the be the forum software in this case). Essentially it should mean that the current format does not change, and those who like the mailing list can still access it, but there is an alternative way to access it for those who prefer forums.
