Nobody has mentioned that promoting linux is different from promoting an operating system. Until folk are agreed on Suse (which I had until Novell took it over) Ubuntu (which I have and enjoy), Kubuntu, mandrice or other systems, the man in the street is going to stay confused. It's like the Cornish who are embattled as which of five ways of writing the Cornish language is best, instead of trying to popularise this ancient language akin to Welsh and Breton.
