The risk is if it goes wrong, there is no-one local who could fix the system and my mother would be without her computer until I can make the 300 mile drive! I wonder if there is an approach whereby I clone the root logical volume and somehow upgrade the clone (without booting into it, that is). That way the system should always at least reboot into the original system?
