Cable is pretty good always on internet. Everything should just work
if not go into System/Admin/Network and enable it. Ntl have an on off
track record apparently but I can't comment as I'm on telewest.

I use Blueyonder, in the London area, which is part of Telewest (now
owned also by NTL). I have not had any problems.
You won't be able to reuse your current DSL modem. It'll be a cable
modem. It shouldn't matter at all. As long as what comes out the
*other* end is an ethernet cable, you just plug in and go.
If you get something that plugs into your USB port and not your
network card, that can be a little more troublesome. I have not had to
do this, and will let someone else chime in. I bet, however, that you
can tell NTL that your PC has a network card and they'll give you the
right equipment.

Telewest and NTL merged in 2004, if I remember correctly. It's all
part of the telecom industry's plan to simply our lives by reducing
choice... :-)

don't cable connections in the UK just use dhcp?
with homechoice, we used dhcp. but we had to ditch homechoice since the
bandwidth was useless.
makes life much easier than using pppoa.

Hi,
I should declare an interest here as I work for ntl:Telewest. The
cable installation is fairly straightforward:
A Coaxial cable will be run to your house and "split" so that two
seperate cables are run to:
a) Your STB for the TV
b) Your cable modem
A seperate twisted pair cable is run in to provide a "standard"
telephone connection
The Cable modem has both Ethernet and USB ports - personally I always
recommend people to use Ethernet. IP addresses are supplied by DHCP so
all you need to do is plug it in and off you go!
For WI-FI/Router you need a router whose upstream is Ethernet (to plug
into the cable modem) - many are available from all the usual names.

I am joyful to say that my letter to the Guardian Technology section
asking for more about Open Source has been published! Today Open
Source, tomorrow, Ubuntu.
9th Nov 2006
http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/technology/archives/2006/11/09/this_weeks_letters_in_full.html#more
'GOOGLE?S OPEN SOURCE MAN'
The paper version is abridged, but reads well.

Fabboooooo!
Speaking as a times reader Id like to add that as a Goal to our plan.
We should be contacting more of the press and the Beeb and telling them
more about open source events and activities.
Cheers

I would appreciate having the files available to burn onto a CD to
offer at Computer fairs etc etc when also offering K/Ubuntu CDs.
A how-to video/s such as these will jump start more than a newbies
knowledge. It adds a very powerful credibility to what they may
hopefully already have heard - it is not a distro from Mars, it is for
human beings.

very much, yes, it is newbies who are looking, with windows shutters
on the eyelids. When anxious they will try to follow exact
instructions. I know, I used to either click yes to everything (note
1), or when push came to shove, try to be blindly exact.
Note 1: Linux cured me of this habit......
